The Honeymooners endured as an iconic television comedy from the 1950s. As short sketches, The Honeymooners, began on the Jackie Gleason Show. For one season, 1955-1956, the show ran as a half hour situation comedy. These episodes are referred to as the "Classic 39". They found their way to syndication and gathered great popularity.
The show centered around four main characters: Ralph Kramden played by Jackie Gleason, his wife Alice Kramden played by Audrey Meadows, and friends Ed and Trixie Norten played by Art Carney and Joyce Randolph. A blue collar actuality surrounded the characters that resided in a Brooklyn apartment building. Ralph, a city bus driver, involved Ed, a sewer worker, in his strategies to become rich often resulting disastrously. Though an abrupt underdog, Ralph possessed a big heart displayed in his love for his often acerbic wife and sometimes simpleminded friends.
Cornered in a lower middle class life, these characters have transcended generations. They summoned viewers to root for them. People lined up at Aldephi Theater in New York City, in the early morning hours, to be part of the live audience later in the evening. Gleason insisted they never fully rehearse any episode so they retained spontaneity. As a classic, The Honeymooners inspired spoofs, parodies, adaptations, and remakes.
