Road to Avonlea was a television series in both Canada and the United States from 1990 until 1996. The series was adapted from books by L.M. Montgomery including “The Golden Road,” “The Story Girl,” “Chronicles of Avonlea” and “Further Chronicles of Avonlea.”
The series was set in Prince Edward Island in the fictional town of Avonlea between the years 1903-1912. Sara Stanley, a 10-year-old heiress, gets sent to live with her two aunts Olivia and Hetty King so she can live close to her late mother’s side of the family. The series shifted from Sara getting to know her aunts and the new environment when it first began to the other residents of Avonlea later on in the series. There were 91 episodes released while it was on the air and all 7 seasons were released on DVD in 2005 and 2006.
Sarah Polley starred in the series as Sara Stanley who was an adventurous 11 year old used to living a luxurious life. She began her film career in 1985 in “One Magic Christmas” and later continued on to star in films including “Splice,” “Mr. Nobody” and “The Sweet Hereafter.”
Sara’s aunts Henrietta and Olivia King were played by Jackie Burroughs and Mag Ruffman. Henrietta is the older sister and teachers in Avonlea. She lacks a sense of humor. Olivia is the younger and more affectionate sibling.
Jackie Burroughs began her acting career in 1982 in both “The Grey Fox” and “The Dead Zone” before assuming the role as Henrietta. She passed away in 2010 from stomach cancer. Mag Ruffman also began acting in 1982 in the movie “Murder by Phone.” She also hosts shows for W. Network and works on home improvement.
Many actors and actresses guest starred in the series including Christopher Lloyd, Eugene Levy, John Neville, Meg Tilly, Michael York, Peter Coyote, Ryan Gosling and Wayne Robson.
The show received 4 Emmy Awards including Outstanding Lead Actor in a dramatic series, Best Children’s Program, a Best Costume Design and Outstanding Guest Actress in a Dramatic Series along with 16 other nominations. It also received 18 Gemini awards, 4 CableAce Awards and 3 John Labatt Classic Awards.
Its most popular episode appears to be episode 12 in season 2 titled “A Mother’s Love” where Sara plants a letter stating Felicity was switched at Birth with Sally Potts.
