The television show "Perry Mason" starred Raymond Burr. It was his first television sit com. It was also a classic that was used to model other television shows that showcased lawyers and courtrooms. The courtroom scenes in "Perry Mason" followed a predictable format. It was in the predictability of the courtroom scene that enhanced the drama of "Perry Mason" and in Raymond Burr's cold, methodical acting performance, of course. "Perry Mason" had two main characters, the lawyer Perry Mason and his secretary Della. The two complimented each other by the astounding presence of space and dignity. Although the scripts had them interacting together for hours on end, there was never any sign of impropriety in their behaviors. If the two had a personal life, the audience did not see it or even have it intimated to them. The show was focused on developing the plot to culminate in the courtroom. It was the courtroom scene that had millions of viewers watching to see Raymond Burr act like a thespian while attacking the guilty person and getting a confession from his mouth sheerly through his dominating presence. Many of the guilty people in the courtroom scenes dominated by Perry Mason would never have been found guilty if they had only kept their mouths shut. But, you couldn't with Perry Mason as the attorney for the defense, fearlessly ferreting out the real criminal and freeing his wealthy falsely charged clients. |
