Boxed DVD Sets"The Partridge Family" is an American TV sitcom that centered on a recently widowed mother with five musically talented children. The show originally ran on the ABC network from September 1970 through August 1974. The show enjoyed a modest ratings success. While "The Partridge Family" never attracted a large audience, it was a huge hit with preteen and adolescent viewers. In the mid-1990s, "The Partridge Family" enjoyed a brief resurgence in popularity when Nickelodeon featured the show as a part of their Nick-At-Night lineup. The pilot episode of "The Partridge Family" begins with mother Shirley Partridge helping her five children record a pop song in their garage. Her 10-year old son, Danny, finds the group a manager named Reuben Kincaid, who helps make the single a Top-40 hit. Kincaid and the Partridge kids convince Shirley to let their group go on tour. Subsequent episodes featured the Partridge family touring the country in their groovy, psychedelically-painted school bus. The shows usually contrasted the adventures and misadventures of life on the road with the cozy suburban life the family enjoyed at home. Actress Shirley Jones was chosen to play supermom Shirley Partridge. Jones's real-life stepson, David Cassidy, joined the show as Shirley Partridge's son, Keith. Susan Dey of future "LA Law" fame played daughter Laurie, while Danny Bonaduce played the scheming, bratty son, Danny. The family was rounded out by young daughter Tracey, played by Suzanne Crough, and son Chris, played in the first season by Jeremy Gelbwaks and then taken over by Brian Forster. Dave Madden played manager Rueben Kincaid. During the four-season run of "The Partridge Family," the show hosted various guest stars, including Dick Clark, Louis Gossett, Jr., Rob Reiner, Howard Cossell and Jodie Foster. Country music star Johnny Cash made a guest appearance in the pilot episode.
"The Partridge Family" episodes always included feel-good music, and ABC wisely promoted the show by releasing albums featuring the Partridge's family band. However, only David Cassidy and Shirley Jones actually sang on the albums. The other cast members couldn't sing or play any musical instruments in real life. All together, "The Partridge Family" released eight albums and 89 songs from 1970 to 1973. The single, "I Think I Love You," reached number one, while the songs "I Woke Up in Love This Morning," "I'll Meet You Halfway" and "Doesn't Someone Want to Be Wanted" also made it onto the charts. |
