Boxed DVD SetsMurder She Wrote was a mystery television series that aired on CBS from 1984 to 1996, making it one of the longest-running programs in American history. Nearly 23 million fans tuned to watch each Sunday during its peak and the critically acclaimed show sparked four made-for-TV movies, a computer game and even a series of books. The show focused on the everyday life of a former schoolteacher-turned-mystery author. Jessica Fletcher uses her instincts to solve the many murder mysteries that plagued her small town of Cabot Cove in Maine. During the 1991 season, Jessica moved to New York City in an effort to revitalize the show. The tactic worked and attracted millions of new viewers until CBS decided to move the show to the Thursday night lineup, putting it in direct competition with comedy programs like Friends and Seinfeld. After twelve seasons, Murder She Wrote was cancelled in 1996. The cast was led by Angela Lansbury, who was nominated for twelve Emmy Awards for her portrayal of Jessica. Lansbury never won for her role and now holds the record for most Emmy nominations without a win. William Windom was cast as Jessica's confidant and friend, Dr. Seth Hazlitt, during the second season. Tom Bosley played the role of town sheriff for the first four seasons before his character was replaced by Sheriff Mort Metzger. Played by Ron Masak, Metzger was a retired New York City police officer who fled to Cabot Cove looking for peace and tranquility. The cast was rounded out by many memorable recurring characters like Jessica's good-intentioned but trouble-making nephew Grady Fletcher, played by Michael Horton. Jerry Orbach was cast as Harry McGraw, a former private eye that helped Jessica solve difficult cases. One of the show's most acclaimed episodes was "Deadly Lady," which aired in 1984. A poor stranger named Ralph arrives in town at the same time businessman Stephen Earl is reported missing. Locals believe Earl is dead but Jessica is suspicious. She believes Ralph is really Earl in disguise, but when a body is discovered near the shore, her theory is challenged and she has another mystery to solve.
