It ran for nine seasons, from September 21, 1998, to May 14, 2007. A CBS production, it was filmed by Sony Pictures in Culver City, California. Following the exploits of Doug and Carrie Heffernan and Carrie's father, Arthur Spooner, the series explores the relationship of a married couple forced to take care of the wife's aging father. In the series, the Heffernans live in Rego Park, Queens, New York. Doug, played by Kevin James, works at the International Parcel Service (IPS) as a delivery driver. Carrie, portrayed by Leah Remini, works as a secretary for a law firm in Manhattan. Jerry Stiller acts as Arthur, a crotchety old man, often the center of weird schemes and odd fallacies. His presence with the household becomes such a distraction for the couple that they are forced to hire a dog walker named Holly to bring him out for walks each day. She is played by Nicole Sullivan. To balance out the dynamics of the series, the show features a group of Doug's friends, giving perspective on the joys and pitfalls of marriage. Deacon Palmer, portrayed by Victor Williams, is Doug's best friend and co-worker. Richie Iannucci, played by Larry Romano, is a woman-loving man who gets a divorce during the series. Patton Oswalt plays Spence Olchin, a nerd living with his mother into his 30s. Doug's cousin, Danny Heffernan, appears in the third season and takes part in a variety of get-rich-quick plans that anger the main characters. He is played by Gary Valentine. The group can often be seen hanging out at the neighborhood bar and grill, Cooper's Ale House, located in West-Central Queens. Unlike other American sitcoms, the King of Queens delves into storylines that commonly pit Doug and Carrie against each other in a game of one-upmanship. They attempt to get the upper hand on one another, but often both end up losing. Other times, the duo team up to get a friend to do something or to make extra money. Meanwhile, Arthur gets angry about some facet of life and often seeks a minor revenge against an organization or person. The unique facet of this show is the fact that the plot is often unresolved at the end of the show. Either the couple realize they have failed in their venture or some sort of trouble remains. As a popular television program, a number of the actors became well-known stars following the demise of the series. Kevin James became a lead actor in many Hollywood comedies such as “Paul Blart: Mall Cop” and “Zookeeper.” Leah Remini became a daytime talk show host. Patton Oswalt, a successful stand-up comic before the show, moved into dramatic acting in some major motion pictures. Finally, Jerry Stiller, a seasoned actor who also appeared in the Seinfeld television show, continued to do guest spots and television advertising. |
