Boxed DVD SetsFive Mile Creek was a Disney television show that was filmed and aired for three seasons, between 1983 and 1985. It took place on the Australian frontier during the 1800s, and centered around a group of Australian and American settlers, mainly the two main characters Kate Wallace and Maggie Scott, who were attempting to run the country's first stagecoach line. It starred Louise Caire Clark as Maggie Scott, Liz Burch as Kate Wallace, Rod Mullinar as Jack Taylor, Jay Kerr as Con Madigan, Michael Caton as Paddy Malone, Peter Carroll as Charles Withers, Gus Mercurio as Ben Jones, Martin Lewis as Sam, Priscilla Weems as Hannah Scott, Shannon Presby as Matt Buckland, and a young Nicole Kidman as Annie. Jonathan Frakes, who would go on to play Commander Riker on Star Trek: The Next Generation, guess starred in the season one episode "Gold Rush" as Annie's estranged husband Adam. The series was filmed in and near Sydney, New South Wales, Australia during seasons one and two. For season three, filming moved to Melbourne, Australia. The crew performed more than 500 hours of research to make sure that the show would be historically accurate. The series began with the T.V movie "The Cherokee Trail," which aired on the Disney channel and was based on a book of the same name by Louis L'Amour. Producer Henry Crawford wanted to take the two main characters, Kate Wallace and Maggie Scott, put them in Australia, and make a series based on their adventures there. The Disney Channel agreed and that was the beginning of Five Mile Creek. Here's a fun fact: Louise Clark earned the nickname "Splash" while filming the first episode of the series, because of a scene where she had to fall into the water. Jay Kerr, who played Con Madigan, once broke his wrist after being bucked from a horse, and had to wear a flesh-colored cast for four episodes. Also, she wore a wet suit beneath her dress to protect her from the cold temperatures. Also, Geoffrey Rush, who has played Captain Barbosa of Pirates of the Caribbean fame, appeared as an uncredited extra during the series. |
