The BBC television show “Lark Rise to Candleford” was adapted from the trilogy of semi-autobiographical novels that were written by Flora Thompson and published initially from 1939 to 1943. “Lark Rise to Candleford” is set toward the end of the 19th century with the tale following the happenings of two communities in the middle of Oxfordshire as the area is progressing.
One of the communities is an up and coming market town by the name of Candleford while the other community is a sleepy quiet village called Lark Rise that is hesitating to move into the future.
The oldest daughter in the Timmins house hold is Laura and the show revolves around her. Laura chooses to leave the comfortable life and quiet town that she knows to work in the market town of Candleford. She shares a residence with her cousin Dorcas Lane who influences Laura through her independent and sparkling personality.
“Lark Rise to Candleford” also presents a story featuring the daily lives of craftsmen and farm workers in each town along with the nobility residing in both communities. Additionally, the show allows viewers to experience the strong friendship between the two women as they rejoice during the good times and support each other during times of strife.
The cast features actresses Julia Sawalha who portrays Dorcas, Dawn French as Caroline Arless and Olivia Hallinan who plays Laura. Furthermore, each actress has received acclaim for her performance. The supporting cast is notable and “Lark Rise to Candleford” mixes humor with drama effectively.
Episode one begins with Laura leaving her family and friends to begin her first job working at the Candleford post office. Dorcas, who is also the postmistress, welcomes Laura with open arms, but other townspeople are not as happy to include a newcomer into their midst. Four seasons of the show was filmed presenting viewers with a look at the 19th century way of life.
The show was officially cancelled last January causing viewers to express their displeasure. As a result, BBC One director Danny Cohen released a statement saying that “Lark Rise to Candleford” has been an incredible experience for the BBC network, but it was time to move on. After Cohen’s comments, numerous fans created an online campaign for the show to be renewed.
